ヲタレッスン #2: Wotagei

Have you ever seen an AKB48 concert?  Did you know there’s something beautiful going on in the concert which only the idols performing on stage can see? Japanese idols aren’t the only one performing during their concerts. The fans themselves have a big participation in making the performance lively and entertaining to both themselves and the idols they are supporting. Even from your Computer screen you could tell that the audience are holding Glow sticks which would wave back and forth or front and back which is timed in with the song that’s currently being performed. This is what they call Wotagei.

Hello and Welcome to SDB48, One of the HUNDREDS of websites on Japanese Idols. This is Jisei and you’re reading the second session of our Wota Lessons. This time we are going to talk about Wotagei. However, we won’t cover the whole Wotagei in general. Instead we will be focusing on Wotagei performed during AKB48 events which covers, Chants, Glowstick movement, Hand Movement , cheers and a few more. Although there are some quite ridiculously awesome wotagei that involves the combinations of dancing, clapping, sudden-jumps and overall AUDIENCE CHOREOGRAPHY which is totally totally awesome by the way when you see the whole lot of the audience in such coordination.

So What is Wotagei?

Wotagei refers to a series of action performed by a wota or a group of Wotas that combines cheering and dancing which fits the song currently being performed by the idols.

Like martial arts Wotagei is something that can’t be done without practice. Wotagei also takes time and experience to master. Performing a Wotagei is like a choreography between the Wotas and their Idols you have to chant the right things at the right time or you’ll be all over the place causing a disturbance between the balance of … err… lets just say you’ll piss people off.

lets move on to the chants you’ve heard so many times and their proper use.

AKB48’s Overture

Aah~ the Overture it really gets you pumped up! You know what I’ll make this my alarm ringtone. Anyway notice the unity of the fans! Amazing right?

Overture: A-K-B   48!!!!!~
Fans: aaaaa~ Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai!
Overture: WOW! Everybody! A live act never seen before…
Fans: aaaaa~ Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai! Hai!
Overture: Here in World famous Akihabara!
Overture: These angels have come down to perform for you!
Fans: Taigaa!, Faiyaa!, Saibaa!, Baibaa!, Daibaa! Jya Jya!!
Overture: Are you ready?
Fans: Torah!, Hii!, Jinzou!, Sen-ii,!
Overture: ARE YOU READY?!!

Fans: Chape!, Ape!

Fans: Rara!
Overture: 48!!
Fans: Tusuke, Moyhontusuke!!
Overture / Fans: A! K! B! 48!!!
Fans: Sore Sore Sore Sore!!!!
Overture: ARE YOU READY!?

Believe it or not these Chants from the AKB48 Overture are also play their roles in AKB48 songs as well usually Chanted around each Instrumental

  • Yosh IKUZO!! Taigaa, Faiyaa, Saibaa, Baibaa, Daibaa Jya Jya!! – Is usually Chanted around the start of a song and ends right before the first verse comes in.
  • Mo~ Iccho IKUZO!! Ama, Shindou, Kasentobijokyo!! – Is usually Chanted at the second instrumental
  • Mo~ Iccho IKUZO!! Chape, Ape, Kara, Kira, Rara, Tusuke, Moyhontusuke!! – Chanted at the 3rd instrumental or after the second chant in the second instrumental if the second instrumental is longer than usual.

At certain times Wotas sing with the Idols during the performance:

AKB48: I want you~
Wotas: I want you~
AKB48: I need you~
Wotas: I need you~
AKB48: I Love you~
Wotas: I Love you~

To me it sounds really good like the whole performance is so lively that standing idle will kill you.

I’m still missing a lot of Chants I’m pretty sure of it but these are what I can remember from what I’ve watched so far and I think its the most basic thing you can learn but once you get a grasp of this then your a step into sheer awesomeness.

NEXT LETS TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE DANCES! which performed by the right amount of people can turn into a beautiful sight.

WOTAGEI – FIRST RABBIT
WOTAGEI – GIVE ME FIVE!
WOTAGEI – PONYTAIL TO SHUSHU

Feel like you can take on the WOTAGEI challege? OF COURSE YOU ARE!!! now all you need are the steps to get you on the right track and avoid those messy out of sync moves. Lets redirect you to Nemu Yumemi’s guide to Wotagei Dance.

Is there a reason why that “are You Ready” stuff is in English? I usually fast forward through that on my DVDs. Too bad, because that is one of the few parts f the show that is in English.
